Dirty Lingerie Biography

The former French actress turned animal activist can also raise a glass of champagne to the fact that she remains one of the ultimate beauty idols.

Bardot became a household name after her seductive starring role in the 1956 film And God Created Woman. She went on to embody a new generation of free-spirited, sexually liberated women who were comfortable in their own skin.

Bardot might have had a little too much fun in the Saint-Tropez sun; she’s often held up as the poster girl for what happens if we don’t wear sunscreen.

But for many women, the Bardot style of beauty from those early years — tousled, sun-kissed hair, black cat-eye make-up, peachy, pouty lips — still strikes a chord.

“She had an on-trend look from the late 1950s through to the 1960s, but there was also something cool and undone about her, which has made her resonate with women ever since,” says Sydney beauty blogger Max May.
“She’s someone I constantly reference,” adds May, also a top celebrity make-up artist and hairstylist. “My clients often request a ‘Bardot eye’. I’ve done this look on many different women, from Sarah Murdoch to Lara Bingle.”

Ever since BB first caught the eye of the paparazzi — at the Cannes Film Festival, while wearing a bikini, naturally — she has written the beauty blueprint for all rising starlets.

Actress Sienna Miller and models Claudia Schiffer and Lara Stone came to prominence for their uncanny likeness to the French bombshell. Kate Moss has worked the look.
“Kate is like a raw, rock version of Brigitte,” May says. “You often see her with inky pencil all around her eyes, and some lift in her messy hair.”

Bardot is also a muse for make-up artists and hair stylists backstage at international fashion weeks.

Most recently Orlando Pita paid homage to her at Diane Von Furstenberg, styling big, bouncy hair with a slightly rumpled finish.
“Bardot’s hair looked naturally textured — a little bedheady, a little beachy — which really suits Australian women,” says make-up artist/hair stylist Rachael Brook.

Her advice: “Rough-dry hair with sea salt spray, run a straightening iron through in pieces, then wrap small sections around your finger until cool, so hair sets in a natural wave.”

And no beauty tribute to Bardot, the original sex kitten, is complete without a cat eye. “Use a gel eyeliner and some sticky tape as your guideline to create the flick,” advises Brook. “Then attach some individual lashes to the ends and etch eyeliner on the inner waterline.”

“Always finish off with nude peachy lips,” adds May.

Oh, and perhaps just a little more sunscreen.
NEEDING some new hair and make-up inspiration? The Milanese and Parisian runways have served up some stunning new trends.

RIPPLED HAIR

WHERE Pucci

HOW To make models look as though they had slept in plaits, stylist Orlando Pita fired up large curling tongs and clamped them over and then under sections, working from eye-level down to create an undulating effect. He then gently brushed waves out for
a slightly hazy effect.
WHERE Versace

HOW Make-up guru Pat McGrath used an opalescent pink shimmer — inspired by the rose Swarovski crystal detailing in the collection — to dust along models’ eyelids, upper cheekbones and the cupid’s bow of lips. A sporty slicked-back blow-out gave the girlie look a modern edge.

SPANISH ROSE

WHERE Dolce & Gabbana

HOW The Italian design duo was inspired by Sicily’s period of Spanish rule. What, to work back with flamenco-esque polka dots and embellished matador-like jackets? Lipstick the colour of blood-red roses and carnations — flowers that hair stylist Guido Palau tucked into the model’s sleek ‘dos.
HOW Referencing fake-tan ads from the 1990s, make-up artist Tom Pecheux warmed up cheeks with bronzing cream, then layered on matte powder bronzer, taking it out to the temples.

Eyes and upper cheekbones were dressed up in a swirl of golden and copper shimmer dusts.

MODERN LUXE

WHERE Nina Ricci

HOW Models seemed to take a leaf out of front-row guest Olivia Palermo’s beauty book, with creamy foundation that created a flawless yet fresh complexion and subtle, smoky lids.

Guido Palau framed it with a centre-parted, low-slung bun, leaving wisps to fall out for a carefree touch.
