ITV’s new drama series, Cilla, starring Sheridan Smith, has had good reviews. As does real-life Cilla, 71. However, a pilots’ website accused Miss Black of always demanding first-class seat 1A, never talking to cabin staff and ‘preferring to direct her wishes through flunkeys who accompany her’. Doesn’t sound like the Cilla we know and love, does it?

Oddball film star John Travolta, 60, passionately defends his much-panned science-fiction movie Battlefield Earth, released in 2000 and based on a novel by Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard. Scientologist Travolta says in an interview: ‘It was a moment where I could say I had all the power in the world and could do whatever I wanted. Not a lot of people get that opportunity, and I did what I wanted to do.’ Battlefield Earth swept the board at the Golden Raspberry Awards, earning Travolta a ‘worst actor’ gong. A critic wrote: ‘A million monkeys with a million crayons would be hard-pressed in a million years to create anything as cretinous as Battlefield Earth.’ You can’t say fairer than that.

In many ways, the tragedy of David Cameron is that he is a man who sought power with no real idea of what he would do when he gained it. He has exercised power for the benefit of his clique and benefactors (as any politician would) but has lacked any over-arching vision. He has just been staggering from crisis to crisis and making random decisions at the time based on what he believes will please the most number of people and thus allow him to stagger on for a little longer. I'm sure that any Tory with a hint of a self-preservation instinct is looking back now and asking themselves: "Why did we elect him again?"

With a name like CAMERON, of course it will. BROWN had an "English" name but was undoubtedly a Scot and BLAIR was apparently born in Edinburgh.......... No less than THREE Prime Ministers of Great Britain in a row, all with Scottish ancestry to one degree or another........ But I suspect it'll be a very long time indeed before a Scot becomes "President" of the EU................
