Oh Ms. Silks, what have you done? I started this book thinking it would be okay, just a quick read to pass some time, boy was I wrong! It was freaking fantastic!! I loved, loved, loved, Allie, she was strong and determined, my type of woman in a story. I hate when the female lead is whiny and weak. And don't get me started on Mr. Tristan Cross, he sounds like the perfect guy. Sexy as sin, smart, loves his family and loyal to a fault. Without giving too much away, Allie needs Tristan to get revenge on the man that abused her mother and Tristan needs Allie to get his friend out a very bad situation. The two are extremely attracted to one another and being in close quarters sets the scene for some hot sex and hotter feelings between the two. My only issue with the book was the fact that the second book isn't out yet because the ending to this one nearly killed me. READ THIS BOOK, YOU WILL THANK LACEY SILKS!3:40 PM 10/17/2014
* spoiler alert ** ARC was provided by MyLit Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Layers Deep is a decent read but nothing exemplary. To the author's credit, the sex scenes are phenomenally written. Muy caliente. As I finished the book, I felt slighted. Cheated even. In the blurb, Allie is depicted as this rookie cop with vengeance on her mind. However, the author fails to include any of Allie's actual "cop work" as evidence. We barely get a glimpse of her personality if she's not laid out flat on her back.
I like strong heroines so I was anticipating a lot of action since Allie is seeking revenge for her mother's rape and miscarriage. I'm imagining all types of badass plans to be hatched. Then again, Allie's a rookie cop and so resorts to moving her mother to different cities to keep her hidden. Ok, not so badass. And then she is literally handed the chance on a silver platter to kill the villainous Wright... And does nothing. Even more unbelievably, she trusts that a stranger is going to "take care of her problem" for her. Doesn't even ask any questions. Oh yes, that's badassery in it's prime. I was perplexed. Another case of missed potential for a gritty and gutsy heroine.
I had high hopes for Allie but by the end of the book I realized that if she were up for worst cop of the year, I'd vote for her with both hands. Maybe Lacey Silks failed to do any research into sex-trafficking rings, police work, and the FBI/CIA/Interpol. Surely out of all the crime fighting agency options, Tristan was not the most qualified person to handle this operation. Which in turns, means Allie was assuredly not the most reliable person to be sent undercover. A rookie cop gets 1 week of Just like in 2013 and the years previous, I STILL HATE INSTA-LOVE. Within the span of 2-3 weeks, Allie and Tristan are in-love and expecting a baby? Seriously? The main characters are cliche and the plot is predictable. The pace moved at warp speed - one minute Allie and Tristan are drinking tequila and the next moment Allie is shot in the stomach and finding out her eggo is preggo. Even the cliffhanger is predictable. Ah well, no use in ranting and raving about how Layers Deep is not my cup of tea. Needless to say, I won't be reading any more of the series.
He took a deep breath of courage and then exhaled, saying, “I should have done this yesterday. If I don’t taste your lips, I won’t get any work done.”
I couldn’t even reply. In an instant, my words were muffled by his mouth, and everything inside me shut down. My body went limp, melting into the seat as my arms flopped at my sides. His hands cupped my face, the pads of his thumbs caressing my cheeks back and forth as his tongue spread my lips, sliding into my willing mouth. He explored inside me, tending to every nook. The longing of his soft kiss pulsed through my whole body, and I forgot who I was and where I was. I had no strength to resist him. I could no longer deny Cross and responded to him, opening my mouth wider, letting my tongue dance with his. A hint of scotch flowed to me as he lingered around my gums and moaned deep inside me. If I had ten tequilla shots, all at once, I doubted they’d knock me off my feet as hard as Cross had. The world spun, the car spun, and when he finally pulled away, I couldn’t believe what had happened and how much his kiss awakened the woman inside me.
Layers Deep is wrought with emotion, intensely sensuous, and so very well written that I could not put it down. This book is very well written. Extremely riveting characters (even the secondary ones) have you turning page by page until the last. Allie and Tristan were interesting and engaging. The love scenes were hot! I was truly ensnared. The plot was suspenseful and intricate. The ending left me with my mouth hanging open and wanting to read the next story. Brava, Ms. Silks! I’m waiting in limbo!

It started with the main character, Allie Green, coming home to retrieve a book she forgot for school. She had just lost her father to a hunting “accident”. When she comes home, she finds one of the town’s most respected men sexually assaulting her mother. She watches under the stairs as he threatens her as he rapes her mother. The attack causes her mother to lose the child she was carrying. From that moment on, she vowed to kill the man who caused her mother so much pain. Later in life, she becomes a police officer just as her late father had been.
One day, one of the wealthiest men in the city, Tristin Cross, comes to her precinct looking for someone to hire for an usual job. The job was to pose as a hooker getting sold at a sex auction in order to attempt to save a girl who was about to be auctioned off into the sex trafficking market. Allie gets the job and ends up falling in love with Tristin.
There are a few steamy situations in this book between Allie and Tristin that will make your toes curl. If you cannot handle hot sex scenes, than this book is not for you. It makes me wish for mind-blowing orgasms like Allie’s.
Though this book was really short, it was really good. I would definitely recommend this book. I cannot wait to read the second book! This book receives a B+ on the Nerd Alert Book Love Book Review scale.
