Austria's Matthias Brandle escaped to victory on stage five of the Tour of Britain in Exeter on Thursday as Poland's Michal Kwiatkowski retained the race leader's yellow jersey.
Brandle (IAM Cycling) was in the day's four-man breakaway alongside Andreas Stauff (MTN-Qhubeka), Maarten Wynants (Belkin) and Shane Archbold (An Post-Chainreaction).
The decisive moment of the 177.3-kilometre route from Exmouth came not on Dartmoor, but on the drag into Exeter up Stoke Hill, with Brandle prevailing.

Brandle won by eight seconds from second-placed Archbold, who beat Wynants in a two-up sprint, while Bardiani CSF's Sonny Colbrelli led the peloton in 14secs behind in fourth.
Team Sky's Ben Swift was fifth, with Kwiatkowski (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) seventh and defending champion Sir Bradley Wiggins (Team Sky) 36th.
Wiggins remained sixth overall, 27secs behind Kwiatkowski, ahead of Friday's sixth stage, the 205.6km from Bath to Hemel Hempstead.
The day's racing included an ascent of Haytor on Dartmoor, but the action ignited within sight of the finish.
Garmin-Sharp initially led the pursuit on the run-in into Exeter, before the other teams with overall contenders shared the workload.
The quartet's advantage was tumbling as the peloton closed in with every revolution on the approach to Stoke Hill.
Omega Pharma-QuickStep, BMC Racing, Team Sky, Tinkoff-Saxo and Bardiani CSF all jostled for position as they tried to reel in escapees.
Dylan van Baarle (Garmin-Sharp) accelerated out of the peloton on the lower ramps of Stoke Hill in an attempt to bridge the gap to the quartet.
Brandle surged into the lead ahead of his fellow escapees as, behind him, Van Baarle was caught and Nicolas Roche (Tinkoff-Saxo) attacked.
The Irishman's move was marked by his overall rivals, whose jostling prevented a coherent chase and saw Brandle win.

Jude Law stunned fans on Thursday when he revealed he was set to become a father for the fifth time.
And now it's been revealed that upcoming singer/songwriter Catherine Harding, aka Cat Cavelli, is the woman expecting his child and is said to be around five months pregnant.
The 23-year-old enjoyed a romance with the actor, 41, earlier this year, spending six weeks with him on location in the Czech Republic where he was filming.

Friends close to the singer told the Daily Mirror she is 'delighted' by the prospect of becoming a mother, despite being separated from Jude.
The actor confirmed he was set to become a father again in a statement on Thursday, reading: 'I can confirm that Jude Law and Catherine Harding are expecting a child together in the spring.

Although the couple have parted ways romantically, Jude is committed to taking part in the child's upbringing and is supporting Cat financially.

A source close to Cat told the Mirror: 'It all happened very quickly. They met a little while ago and fell for one another, then Cat told friends that she was going out to Prague, that's when it emerged that she was in a relationship with Jude.
'Sadly they are no longer a couple but that they are both so determined that the baby will be loved very much by both his or her parents.
'It is easy to see why Jude fell for Cat, she is beautiful, she is the person who when she walks in a room you just think "wow, look at her."'
The Mirror reported how Cat had been working with Simon Cowell's SyCo music company and was considering auditioning for The X Factor.
