Fun and mystery abound in William Ritter's tale of the young detective (of sorts) R. F. Jackaby and his new and able assistant, Miss Abigail Rook, in the eponymous Jackaby. Set in New England in 1892, it feels very English in both setting and character - but the setting is the least important feature to note in this serial killer mystery.

Supernatural surprises are the real delight in this novel, including a highly unusual "decorating" of the third floor of his house, which is unlike any other. Jackaby is a curious fellow, seeing things others don't, but unlike Sherlock (with whom he must be compared), Jackaby gives equal value to myth, occult, and magic as well as rational thought. He is odd, aloof, and brilliant in ways. As the specter Jenny says of him, "Science and magic, beauty and bedlam, things that ought to be at odds - they just don't follow the same rules when Jackaby's involved." He claims to be a man of science, yet also refers to himself as a Seer, a detector of invisible things. We aren't talking CSI here, but trolls! It is his unconventional attitude that allows Rook into his fold, since a young woman would rarely be allowed as his assistant at this time.

Of course the comparison to Doctor Who in the book's description piques interest, and Jackaby's awkwardness and (at times unintentional) quick wit are reminiscent of some forms of the Doctor. We engage the story through Rook's eyes, and she plays a supporting role not unlike companions to Doctor Who. Rook's atypical for her time - indeed, she's run away from her expected life in England, craves adventure, and (gasp) doesn't even let her parents know where she is. She's lucked into adventure and then some with Jackaby, though this reader hopes her intelligence and determination are developed more in their next mystery (that I surely hope is being written).

Jackaby ends with a nice set of discussion questions, including what must be my all-time favorite: "Why do you think Douglas wants to remain a duck?" Why indeed, and that line alone should send you running to your e-reader to get a copy of this entertaining young adult/adult mystery.

Eden Collinsworth's I Stand Corrected: Real Perspective on China

By Kenneth Miller
In I Stand Corrected: How Teaching Western Manners in China Became Its Own Unforgettable Lesson, Eden Collinsworth puts many things into perspective about life, culture, experiences, and traveling, all through her subtle reminders of common Western manners. Her anecdotes express sincere and relatable emotions and allow the reader to actually feel something in the midst of refreshing reminders of respectable behavior. Collinsworth engages her reader in a tale about achieving life goals, as she aims to build her career while balancing her personal life. She details her experience of managing risk, love, and developing relationships, as she contrasts Western mores with China's ever-changing culture.

Collinsworth began her successful business career at a young age. She pioneered many business relationships between U.S. and Chinese companies. Her struggles are not unique, but her approach is admirable. She explains the importance of thinking before speaking and, in return, wittily responds to social differences. Her stories are shocking and very entertaining.

I Stand Corrected is much more than a book about Western manners. It is a history lesson about China's development, a romantic comedy, a story about the love between a mother and son, and an inspirational tale of one woman's real-life path to great achievements. Collinsworth's stories intertwine to offer a fascinating journey between and through East and West.

Gilliam, Collinsworth's son, is a mainstay throughout the book. Gilliam is the author's beacon of light and true inspiration in writing about Western manners in China. From a young age, Gilliam had the great luxury of international education. The book's premise starts when Gilliam is studying in China. He realized Chinese businesspeople lack resources to learn acceptable Western conduct, and he is the one who suggested to Collinsworth she create a program of sorts that provides this important service. This conversation prompted the author to leave everything and head to China.

After a bit of research, lots of strange meals, and translation help from her son, Collinsworth wrote a book explaining Western manners as they relate to the Chinese conducting business. The book is now a bestseller and used throughout business schools in China. She wrote I Stand Corrected as a humorous take on her experience writing her Chinese language book, The Tao of Improving Your Likeabiltiy: A Personal Guide to Effective Business Etiquette in Today's Global World, and her many years of experience conducting business and consulting in China. This insightful and smart nonfiction story reads like a multifaceted fiction novel. Each chapter builds on the next and leaves you wishing for more.
