HONG KONG/BEIJING, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Data showing that the Chinese economy quickly lost steam in August caused some economists on Monday to trim their 2014 growth forecasts for the country.
UBS shaved its full-year forecast to 7.2 percent from 7.3 percent. Barclays Capital reduced its projection to 7.2 percent from 7.4. ING cut its forecast to 7.4 from 7.5 percent.
Over the weekend, data showed factory output grew at its weakest pace in nearly six years in August while weaker readings in investment, retail sales and imports revealed a picture of an economy struggling to gain momentum despite recent stimulus steps.
"Our downward revision is based on our belief of a shift in the government's attitude and it is now less focussed on achieving the 7.5 percent growth target," analysts at Barclays said in a note.
The slowdown in the data also indicated banks are getting cautious about lending, especially with the backdrop of mounting pressure on company balance sheets and an entrenched slowdown in the property sector, a key engine for economic growth.
China's total social financing aggregate, a broad measure of lending in the economy, was 957.4 billion yuan ($155.88 billion) in August versus 273.1 billion yuan in July, which was the weakest in nearly six years, data showed last week, indicating credit levels were far below average.
Recent comments by top Chinese policymakers hinted the government was bracing for a period of slow growth. Premier Li Keqiang said last week China cannot rely on loose credit to lift its economy, adding that it is difficult for the country to avoid short-term fluctuations in growth.
While the latest batch of data adds pressure on the central bank to loosen monetary policy, economists believe Beijing would be reluctant to roll out any massive headline measures such as cutting interest rates and would prefer to resort to targeted small steps for now.
"With the help of net exports, GDP growth in 2014 can stay slightly above 7 percent," wrote economists at Gavekal Dragonomics, an economic research firm. Upcoming singer/songwriter Catherine Harding, also known as Cat Cavelli, is the woman expecting his child and is said to be around five months pregnant, a statement given by Law's representative to MailOnline revealed.
The 23-year-old enjoyed a romance with the star and it is understood to have conceived around May/June, while spending six weeks with him on location in the Czech Republic where he was believed to have been filming Spy. The baby will be Law's fifth child, by three different partners.

Jude is now busy filming upcoming movie, Genius in the UK, in which he stars as Thomas Wolfe, alongside Nicole Kidman and Guy Pearce.
The movie is a chronicle of Max Perkins's time as the book editor at Scribner, where he oversaw works by Wolfe, Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald among others.

Miller has revealed it was a 'relief' to end things amicably with Jude Law and is glad she gave him a second chance in 2009 and was able 'heal' their friendship before calling it quits for good.
Discussing their second shot at love, she told Esquire magazine: 'When something ends in a way like that, it's important if you can, in a way, go back and revisit it and either shut that door or create a new room. So it was a very healthy, cathartic experience.
'And I think it paved the way for both of us to have great futures with no animosity or drama. Such a huge relief, to heal that. And I'm great friends with him and with his children. I love them, madly. Just huge love and respect for all of them.'

The budding musician, who calls himself Raff as ‘I don’t really like the name Rafferty’, is in a band called The Dirty Harrys.
Of not following in his father’s footsteps, he told the London Evening Standard: ‘I did feel a bit of pressure when I joined my first boarding school [Bedales in Hampshire].
He also said of his famous father: 'My dad’s got his five friends and he sticks to them. He always tells me, “You don’t need loads of friends,” which is true.’
‘In my drama lesson, I think everyone thought: "Oh God, he’s going to be so brilliant". Then they realised that I wasn’t that good, so they just let me get on with it.’
He said meeting Blur and The Clash through his parents had helped him forge a music career, adding: ‘I did work experience for Blur for two weeks when they were rehearsing for their reunion gig, because Damon [Albarn] is really good friends with my dad. I tuned their guitars and stuff.’
